My weight

Will drugs make me fat or thin?

Some people are unhappy with their weight and think they are either too fat or too thin. Healthy eating, exercise and plenty of sleep are the best ways to keep good-looking, but some people think alcohol or drugs can help.

So how do alcohol and drugs affect your weight?

Drugs can affect your weight in different ways.

Some drugs, like nicotine, cocaine, ecstasy and speed make you lose your appetite so you are likely to lose weight. They also make you burn up lots of energy. The problem with this is that the body needs fuel, and if its running on an empty stomach it'll use up energy from elsewhere. That's ok if you've got a bit of fat and lots of nutrients to spare, but if you haven't it starts eating away at your organs, leaving you with problems with your skin, hair, kidneys, muscles, nerves and in extreme cases your brain.

Scales and an apple

Other drugs, like alcohol or heroin, can make you feel or be sick, so you lose weight that way. Not pretty.

Lots of alcohol can make you put on weight; notice the old man's beer belly and man-boobs? This happens to women and men. Drink doesn't contain a lot of nutrients, most of it is empty calories, so while it fills you up it doesn't give your body what it needs to function healthily. Alcohol is no substitute for a balanced meal.

Cannabis can give you the munchies. This is when you crave anything at all to eat but lack the motivation to cook, so you're likely to put on a lot of junk-food related weight. Again, junk food gives only empty calories without much nutrition, so is no substitute for a healthy meal.

Drugs that slow you down (downers) like alcohol, tranquillisers, methadone or heroin can make you put on weight as you don't burn enough calories through exercise.

Whatever the weight problem you think you have, taking alcohol and drugs is likely to complicate it. Its better to think of other ways to make yourself look and feel better. We can help you with this so do get in touch.
