Mephedrone aka Meow; Mieow; Meph; M-Cat; 4-MMC; Plant Food; Drone

mephedrone

What is it?

Mephedrone or 4-methylmethcathinone (4-MMC) is a chemically produced cathinone (cathinones occur naturally in the khat plant and are related to amphetamine compounds like ecstasy).

Many cathinone derivatives are being sold online and in headshops as 'legal highs'.

Mephedrone is a stimulant drug said to have effects similar to MDMA producing euphoria, alertness, talkativeness and feelings of empathy.

However, it seems to have more in common with amphetamine (speed), producing a more jagged or rough experience. It can also cause anxiety and paranoid states and risk overstimulating the heart and nervous system to cause fits.

Severe nosebleeds have been reported after snorting.

Mephedrone has been linked to around 26 deaths, 24 of these had probably used mephedrone along with alcohol and/or other drugs.

Mixmag reported that:

  • 67% of users reported excessive sweating
  • 51% headaches
  • 43% palpitations
  • 27% nausea
  • 15% cold or blue fingers

It is a white or off-white powder which smells 'like a sickly sweet air freshener' and is described as a plant food or a research chemical not for human consumption. It is sometimes mixed with other cathinones and caffeine.

Reports say that it can be compulsive to use and can create a state of psychological dependence. Users report using again and again throughout a session, until no more is available. Limiting amounts used is likely to lower the risk of side effects. Combining with alcohol or other drugs is likely to increase the risk.
