Alcohol Law

The law is a bit complicated when it comes to alcohol.

You can get a criminal record for offences of drunkenness. Being drunk is no excuse if you end up in court on a charge of criminal damage or violence (No you can't plead temporary insanity). The Police are able to fine you up to £80 for various offences in relation to alcohol use.

Currently

  • 5 year-olds and upwards may consume alcohol at home with adult supervision
  • Under 14’s year-olds may go into a pub with a children’s certificate but must stay in a garden or family room
  • 16 year-olds may go into a pub where alcohol is served and at licensee’s discretion may consume – not purchase - alcohol brought by a parent as long as it is with a meal
  • 16-17 year-olds may purchase beer, port, cider or perry in an eating area on licenced premises

You can also get done for drink driving if you have control of a moped or car (the engine doesn't have to be on), or drunk in charge of a bicycle or even a child (no drunk babysitting then).
